Frogs, Bugs & Animals - Oh My!

On Friday, August 21st, the library was taken over by Jason and his frogs, bugs and animals!  Kids and parents came to the library to see Jason's show and to pet all different kinds of critters. Tons of people came and fun was had by all!

Jason brought tons of different animals and insects with him, including Feathers the chicken, rabbits, chinchillas, toads, a quail, baby snakes, hedgehogs, guinea pigs, a bearded dragon, lizards, a tarantula, hissing cockroaches, frogs, a tortoise, worms, mice, hermit crabs and more!

Jason and Feathers led the audience in the chicken dance and Jason's cow got a little crazy and sprayed everyone with milk!  Thanks to Jason and his animals for coming out to see us and for doing such a great program! They did an awesome job!

So Much Fun at Super Hero Story Hour!

We also did a super sticker craft, where children put super hero stickers on a city landscape to create a sticker scene.

Last, but certainly not least, the children super heroes posed for pictures with our super hero backdrop and cape! The kids super heroes got to take home a commemorative printout of their photo from the story hour! A super time was had by all!

Rainy Day Lego Programs

This past Tuesday we had such heavy rainstorms that the children's room was filled to bursting all day long! Children and parents came in to play with puzzles and games, read books, go on the computers and iPad and escape the weather.  I was so happy that we had two Lego programs planned for the afternoon - perfect timing!  Fawn from Kidz Under Construction came to the library and ran the programs: Lego Super Heroes Build for children grades 1-3 and Lego Robotics for grades 4-6.  By the time the afternoon rolled around, both classes were full, with some people on a waiting list ot get in.

Lego Super Heroes Build was the first program and our room was full of the children participating in the program and their parents.  Children worked in groups of four to build different super heroes such as the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Batman and more! Children used their own "super powers" of listening, following directions and working as a team to complete their projects.  Fun was had by all - check out some of the photos by our super builders below!

The second Lego program was really awesome - the children made Lego projects and watched them come alive by hooking them up to the computer.  Working in groups of four, the kids built pretty intricate projects such as a ferris wheel, lion, monkey, soccer goalie and more and got to see them move around!  Children and parents alike were amazed (and sop was I)!  Here's some phtos of the robotics program and even some videos of the finished projects!

Thanks again to Fawn and Kidz Under Construction for some awesome programs on a very rainy day! We hope she will come back soon!

A Perfect Afternoon with Petra's Puppets!

Last week, Steve Petra from Petra's Puppets visited the Montauk Library to perform his Calling All Heroes show for children and parents.  He brought his friends Ultra Duck, Eric the Super Sheep, Granny Pterodactyl and the villainous Gorgonzilla along with him and they all put on a fantastic show for everyone in attendance!

Steve did a lot of magic tricks...

And Ultra Duck ate a lot of raviolis!

Eric the Super Sheep showed us how strong he was...

And Baby Gouda morphed into the villainous Gorgonzilla before our eyes!

Some of the audience members even got to show that they were super heroes too!

After the entertainment, Steve and Ultra Duck took pictures with the children. Thanks again to Steve for an afternoon of humor, magic, puppets and fun! We hope he comes back to visit again soon!

New Books Are Here!

The Montauk Library Children's Room has a lot of new titles to choose from! Since I've started here in July, I've been ordering new titles for children and teens. I've added the Ladybug Girl series by David Soman to the collection, which is the perfect picture book series for those who enjoyed Pinkalicious, Olivia and Fancy Nancy!  Read all about Ladybug Girl and her adventures with her dog Bingo and her friend Bumblebee Boy - borrow a title or two today! My personal favorite, Dragon Loves Tacos, has also been added to the collection, along with other titles such as Stick and Stone, I Don't Want to Be A Frog, Twinkle and MUCH more!

For school-aged readers, we have a lot of new chapter books, including the My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish series and we've added to our Big Nate, Captain Underpants, Magic Treehouse and Captain Awesome titles!

For fans of the Cupcake Diaries, the library now has the first ten books in the series, with more on the way! This is such a delicious series for girls and if you haven't tried them you won't be disappointed! Additional Clementine, Dork Diaries and Judy Moody titles have been added as well.

Babymouse titles have also been added, along with Big Nate Comix for graphic novel enthusiasts.  Graphic novels are a great way to get reluctant readers involved and engaged in the reading process - and they are a lot of fun as well!

Finally, I've made a lot of additions to the young adult section, with titles including The Red Queen, We Were Liars, the Ranger's Apprentice series, Alive, All the Bright Places, Fan Girl, Finding Audrey and many more!

Stop in today to check out the new selections! More titles are being added and if you can't find something ask - I can always request it for you!
